Overview

“Pain Clinic” — as the name suggests — is a specialized department dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of pain occurring in various parts of the body. Our clinic currently treats patients suffering from pain associated with cancer, shingles (herpes zoster), trigeminal neuralgia, low back pain, headaches, and more.
The primary treatment approach at our Pain Clinic is nerve block therapy. This involves injecting a local anesthetic near the painful area or the nerve responsible for transmitting pain to provide relief. Beyond temporary pain relief, it can also improve blood circulation, activate the body’s natural healing ability, and break the “vicious cycle of pain.” In recent years, we have also introduced near-infrared light irradiation as an alternative to injections, allowing patients to receive treatment without the discomfort of needles.

Pain Clinic treatment

In addition to these Western medical approaches, our Pain Clinic also incorporates Eastern medicine treatments such as Kampo (herbal medicine) and acupuncture, allowing us to select the most appropriate treatment for each patient.
The physicians at our Pain Clinic are anesthesiologists who regularly perform surgical anesthesia and are experienced in emergency resuscitation. They have also received specialized training in pain clinic medicine, so patients can receive treatment with confidence. If you are suffering from pain, we encourage you to visit our Pain Clinic.

Conditions Treated

Herpes Zoster (Shingles) & Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

During the acute phase, antiviral medications are administered alongside nerve block treatments such as epidural block, nerve root block, stellate ganglion block, and trigeminal nerve block to achieve early pain relief. For refractory cases with a high risk of progressing to post-herpetic neuralgia, we use radiofrequency thermocoagulation and ketamine therapy. Post-herpetic neuralgia is primarily managed with oral medication, but nerve blocks may also be combined in selected cases.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Oral medication is combined with treatments such as epidural block, nerve root block, and lumbar sympathetic ganglion block.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Oral medication is used, and for cases with poor symptom control, trigeminal nerve block using radiofrequency thermocoagulation or neurolytic agents is performed.

Facial Nerve Palsy

Oral corticosteroid therapy is combined with treatments such as stellate ganglion block and near-infrared light irradiation.

Low Back Pain

Depending on the cause, oral medication is combined with epidural block, facet joint block, nerve root block, and lumbar sympathetic ganglion block. For refractory cases, medial branch block using radiofrequency thermocoagulation is performed. For acute vertebral compression fractures, vertebral decompression procedures may also be performed.

Cancer Pain

In addition to WHO-based oral therapy, nerve blocks using neurolytic agents and radiofrequency thermocoagulation are performed.

Headache

Treatment is primarily medication-based, but depending on the case, nerve block therapies such as stellate ganglion block, auriculotemporal nerve block, occipital nerve block, sphenopalatine ganglion block, cervical facet joint block, and upper cervical nerve root block may also be used. In June 2020, our clinic was approved as a certified facility by the Japan Headache Society. We will continue to provide care that helps patients suffering from headaches.

Facial & Eyelid Spasm

Oral medication and botulinum toxin injection therapy are used.

Clinical Research

Our department conducts the following clinical research with the approval of the ethics committee. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in the advancement of medical research.
